Quick answer: Doha Airport (DOH) describes its terminal as entirely barrier-free, lends wheelchairs free at its information desks and runs a free shuttle buggy between concourses. A personal helper, the person who takes you from the aircraft door through transfer security to your next gate, is booked through your airline; on Qatar Airways, no later than 48 hours before departure. Since February 2026 the airport has also supported the Sunflower lanyard for hidden disabilities, handed out at information desks in the check-in hall, by the Lamp Bear and in the Orchard.

What the airport provides without booking

The airport's special assistance page calls the terminal entirely barrier-free: elevators, escalators, ramps, walkways and a passenger train make up its access network, and the boarding gates for the Airbus A380 have elevators to the upper deck. Assisted passengers are usually boarded first and taken off last. Complimentary wheelchairs are kept throughout the building; ask at the nearest information desk. The chair is free, but if you need someone to push it, inform your airline in advance so that a helper can be arranged.

Washrooms adapted for reduced mobility stand at many points, and the facilities directory adds companion toilets: single rooms large enough for a wheelchair user and a helper, who may be of the opposite sex. For waiting, the assistance page describes a dedicated lounge with comfortable seating, televisions and a trained attendant, adapted washrooms close by, and links it to the airport map. The facilities directory, read the same day, speaks instead of several special handling lounges for the elderly, wheelchair users, unaccompanied minors and sick passengers, and tells you to approach an information desk for more.

Booking assistance with Qatar Airways

Doha is the home base of Qatar Airways, whose disability and medical assistance page sets the rules for its passengers. A wheelchair can be requested while booking or up to 48 hours before departure, through Manage booking on qatarairways.com, in the mobile app or at a local Qatar Airways office. The request comes in three levels, and the level decides what help you get at the aircraft.

At the airport itself, the airline says help can also be requested at check-in counters, information desks or special handling counters, yet it recommends arriving three hours before the flight once assistance is booked. Checked bags of assisted passengers get a special tag for prompt delivery, and priority boarding is offered. On another airline, follow its rules: the airport's pages leave the helper to the airline and ask you to give it as much notice as possible.

Changing planes in a wheelchair

Doha is a hub, and the transfer is where reduced mobility costs the most time. The airport's transfers page says special assistance travellers are met at the aircraft or aerobridge on arrival and get priority processing through the transfer, which includes a hand-baggage screening before you enter the passenger terminal. Transfer halls sit at concourses A, B, C and D. Boarding gates close 20 minutes before departure, and that deadline does not move for anyone waiting for a helper.

The building is long. The airport counts five concourses, 62 contact gates and 128 remote stands, and none of its pages read for this guide explains how wheelchair users board at a remote stand. If aircraft steps are the problem, book WCHS or WCHC rather than WCHR, because the level you booked is the help the airline plans for. Between concourses, the free shuttle buggy stops in Concourse B in front of the Duty Big Value store and in Concourse E near Gate E1, with arrival stops near D1 and E1 that drop passengers by the immigration escalators. A passenger train links the South Plaza and the North Plaza; baggage carts are not allowed on it.

Your own chair can stay with you wherever possible. Qatar Airways carries one wheelchair or mobility aid free, stows one fully collapsible chair in the cabin of wide-body aircraft when space allows, and has onboard wheelchairs on its A330, A350, A380, 777 and 787 fleet. Battery-powered chairs travel in the hold after approval; the airport adds that a dry battery must be removed and packed to your airline's rules, while a wet battery counts as dangerous goods. One rule shapes routes: a passenger on a stretcher can fly Qatar Airways only in Economy and only with no transit, which rules out a connection through Doha. For a long wait airside, our Doha Airport layover guide covers lounges, rest areas and timing.

Hidden disabilities and the Sunflower lanyard

On 1 February 2026 the airport announced its membership of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, welcomed in the same release by Topland, the scheme's Middle East partner. Wearing the lanyard is voluntary. It tells staff you may need extra time or understanding, clear communication, help with directions or a quiet space. Teams across airport operations, Qatar Airways Group, partner airlines, retail and services were trained to recognise the symbol. Departing passengers collect a lanyard from the information desks in the check-in area; transferring passengers from the desks in the Lamp Bear area and the Orchard.

The Sensory Room in the Muzn Lounge, between gates C7 and C9, holds equipment designed to calm children on the autism spectrum and others with special needs. The airport lists it as free for ages 2 to 12 and open 24 hours a day, with [email protected] and +974 4010 6666 for enquiries; Qatar Airways describes the same room as a calm space for passengers with hidden disabilities. One airline rule is easy to miss: Qatar Airways wants those needs reported, and a medical certificate confirming fitness to fly sent for review by its Medical Desk, 48 hours before departure. Anyone who cannot follow safety instructions or manage personal needs alone must travel with a companion. On flights to or from the United States a certificate is generally not required, unless the journey needs extraordinary medical assistance.

Automated lanes are not yet for everyone. The airport's Fast Pass facial recognition service says it is not yet available for passengers with disabilities, and that this is planned for the future.

Arriving in Doha or starting your trip here

Priority processing also covers passport control on arrival and check-in and security on departure. Assisted travellers get complimentary help with their bags in the baggage hall, where others pay a fixed fee for a porter. Each check-in row starts with an adapted desk, except the Qatar Airways rows where it is the last counter, and the seated First Class desks are all adapted. The arrivals guide for Doha walks through the halls after landing.

For the road, the airport's taxi page says to book an adapted taxi directly with Mowasalat on +974 4458 8888, giving as much notice as possible; the ordinary rank is covered in our Doha Airport taxi guide. The metro page calls the stations accessible and air-conditioned, and reserved spaces wait in both the short-term and long-term car parks. Two medical centres, in arrivals before passport control and in departures near check-in, work 24 hours on +974 4010 9222.

Al Maha Services also sells meet and assist packages for arrivals, departures and transfers, through its website or at its sales office. On the transfer packages, the airport says, a hostess meets you at the aircraft or aerobridge with a personalised name board. The airport's Al Maha page shows no price.

Who to ask when something goes wrong

If a helper is missing, go first to your airline; Qatar Airways customer service desks include points in concourses A, B and C. Information desks run by the airport stand in the departures hall, the arrivals meeting point, the duty free circulation area, concourses A, B and C and the walkway to concourses D and E. The DOH terminal guide covers the rest of the building.
