Hamad International Airport (DOH) is one of the best-equipped airports for a layover: airside you can use lounges, the in-terminal Oryx transit hotel by the hour, a spa and pool, The Orchard indoor garden and plenty of dining. With roughly 6 hours or more you can even visit the city, 15 km away.
Few airports are as well set up for a stopover as Hamad International Airport (DOH). As the Qatar Airways hub, Doha is built around connecting passengers, so a layover here can be genuinely comfortable, and with the city only about 15 km away (a 15–25 minute drive), a longer stop can even fit in a taste of Doha before you fly on. How long a layover do you need?
Roughly speaking, the longer your stop, the further you can stray from the gate, but even a short connection here is comfortable, because so much is airside. Use this as a rough guide and always leave a buffer to clear security or re-board.

Resting and relaxing airside
This is where Doha stands out. Without leaving the airside area you can:
- Book the transit hotel: the Oryx Airport Hotel inside the terminal offers rooms by the night or, for a few hours, day-use rates, handy for sleeping between flights without entering Qatar.
- Use a lounge: the airport's lounges, including the Al Mourjan Business Lounge, offer food, showers and quiet seating; some are open to eligible passengers or via paid access.
- Relax and refresh: there are quiet rooms, a spa, a swimming pool and gym facilities, prayer rooms, and comfortable seating throughout.
- See the art and the garden: stroll to The Orchard, the indoor tropical garden, and find the famous Lamp Bear sculpture and other installations dotted around the terminal.
- Eat and shop: a wide range of restaurants, cafés and an extensive duty-free hall fill the time easily.
Leaving the airport: a Doha stopover
With a longer gap, and the right entry permission, you can head into the city. Popular quick visits include Souq Waqif for its lanes, cafés and atmosphere, the waterfront Corniche and West Bay skyline, the Museum of Islamic Art, and the National Museum of Qatar. Qatar Airways and Discover Qatar also run transit tours and a stopover programme that can package a short city visit, and sometimes a hotel night, around your connection.
Before you plan to leave the airport, check two things carefully: whether you are eligible to enter Qatar (many nationalities can enter visa-free or on a visa on arrival, but confirm your own rule, see our arrivals guide), and how much time you truly have once you allow for immigration both ways and the drive. To get into town, use the official Karwa taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer that can wait for you.
Layover tips
- Keep your boarding pass and passport handy, and note your onward gate and its walking distance early, the terminal is large.
- For a city trip, leave a generous buffer for immigration in both directions and Doha traffic.
- Qatar uses the Qatari riyal (QAR), and cards are widely accepted, so you need little cash for a short visit.
- Qatar has a warm-to-hot climate; if you go outside in summer, plan for the heat and stay hydrated.
